Overview

The ShipWorks Software Development team is empowered with enhancing, modifying, and maintaining features and functionality associated with the ShipWorks software product.

 

The Manager, Software Development plays an important role at ShipWorks by leading our team of software engineers in providing real-time solutions for our customers when they need it the most. The role will develop and implement business plans, policies and procedures. Collaborate with various departments to prioritize software development needs including design, development, and documenting and testing new and existing software. Evaluate results within business unit to determine if organizational objectives are being met. Analyze and resolve software development issues and needs in terms of the software's full life cycle. The Manager, Software Development will also manage the activities of individual contributors including hiring, firing, performance appraisals, and pay reviews.

Responsibilities

Primary Objectives:

  1. Manage, organize, mentor and motivate a team of software developers.
  2. Collaborate with various departments to prioritize software development needs.
  3. Evaluate results within business unit to determine if organizational objectives are being met
  4. Analyze and resolve software development issues and needs.

  1. Collaborate with various department to prioritize software development needs.
  • Constructively engage with team members and management through open and active communication channels when problem solving and developing solutions, recommending changes in policies, procedures, and tooling.
  • Produce specifications as needed to determine operational feasibility and convey ROI projections of proposed solutions.
  • Contribute to product planning and operational oversight within the scrum framework
  • Strategically plan/coordinate the development effort and assignments to meet the needs of stakeholders

  • Design performant, reliable, and scalable architectures

  • Manage the software’s full life cycle
  • Provide project management and technical leadership in the areas of agile and lean methodologies within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
  • Lead the technical planning, architecture, development, and execution phases to continuously deliver a high quality software product on a regular cadence

Qualifications

Required Education and/or Experience:                                                             

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Math or equivalent years of relevant work experience
  • Six or more (6+) years of experience in software development role, preferably within the e-commerce or shipping software industries.
  • One or more (1+) years of experience managing software development teams in a fast paced, highly collaborative, Agile environment

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proven ability with leading a development team operating within an Agile software development environment
  • Proven ability with building high-performance, highly-available and scalable distributed systems
  • Understanding of advanced object oriented design and SOLID design principles with strong design/architecture instincts
  • Thorough understanding of C#/.NET or comparable stack
  • Strong understanding of SQL, relational database systems (SQL Server and PostgreSQL), and ORM frameworks
  • AWS (Lambda, SQS, RDS, EC2)
  • Messaging (SQS, MSMQ, RabbitMQ, etc.)
  • Strong understanding with Domain Driven Design techniques
  • Ability with UML (class diagrams, sequence diagrams, etc.) and other modeling techniques to communicate architecture and design concepts
  • Proven ability with establishing metrics for measurement of engineering and operational excellence.
  • Pragmatic and iterative approach to building software
  • Strong people management skills with the ability of hire and grow talented engineers
  • Data driven with the ability to measure and quantify throughput and quality in a meaningful way
  • Detail oriented with strong organization skills
  • Demonstrates strong communication and team skills including the ability to work with people possessing a variety of skill sets
  • Familiarity with shipping and/or shipping software is a plus
  • Displays a high degree of professionalism and contributes to the credibility of the company
  • Can be productive and self-motivated in a fast paced, highly collaborative environment
  • Uses time efficiently, possesses a solid work ethic and customer-focus
  • Acts with a sense of urgency, especially where customer impact and/or delays to shipping exists
  • High degree of intellectual curiosity and a thirst for knowledge – we’re always looking for ways to improve our processes while continuing to produce high quality solutions for our customers

Computer/Software/Application Proficiency:                                                  

  • Windows Server, C#, C, XML, XSL, HTML, PHP, Node.js, AWS, SQL and NoSQL databases.
